Introduction: Extending the Rosetta Stone

The Vertical-Horizontal Distinction is the Rosetta Stone of the Sanity First framework. It teaches us to separate two fundamentally different axes of orientation: the vertical axis of alignment with universal principles (the USF, measured by the Four Tests) and the horizontal axis of proximity to self (tribal, social, or individual preference).

These are not fixed personality types or permanent labels. They are dynamic orientations — patterns of trust and alignment that any mind can move through, sometimes within moments. The map does not judge; it illuminates. It gives us language to recognize where we (or others) currently stand, understand the characteristic strengths and vulnerabilities of each orientation, and navigate intentionally toward greater alignment with the Guiding Star.


How Attraction and Aversion Flow Through the Map

Phase II introduced the emotional architecture of intelligence — the forces of attraction (“Love of the Up”) and aversion (“Rage at the Down”) that drive sustained engagement with alignment work. Before examining each quadrant in detail, it’s worth tracing how these forces operate differently across the map, because the same emotional energy produces radically different outcomes depending on where it’s channeled.

In the aligned quadrants (Q1 and Q2), attraction is directed upward — toward the USF, toward truth, toward flourishing for all. The horizontal and inward forces serve this vertical orientation rather than competing with it. In Q1, outward trust connects the individual to aligned others who are also looking Up — the horizontal force facilitates the vertical. In Q2, inward trust connects the individual to their own calibrated discernment, which is itself oriented Up — the inward force facilitates the vertical. Aversion in these quadrants is directed downward — at misalignment itself, at the patterns that obstruct flourishing.

In the misaligned quadrants (Q3 and Q4), the vertical connection has been lost. Attraction no longer reaches Up; it has been captured by horizontal or inward forces that replace rather than serve the vertical. In Q3, love redirects to the tribe — to “my side,” to whatever’s nearest on the horizontal plane — regardless of whether that tribe is looking Up or Down. In Q4, love redirects to the self — to one’s own ego, predictions, and desires — regardless of whether those are calibrated to reality. Aversion similarly misfires: in Q3, rage targets the Other Side rather than the Down (attacking outsiders who may be more aligned than the tribe); in Q4, rage targets the self (Q4I) or anything external that doesn’t affirm the ego (Q4E) rather than the patterns of misalignment that actually threaten flourishing.

The strategic goal is always to go Up. But going Up sometimes requires tactical movement to the side (Q1’s collaboration) or inward (Q2’s self-refinement) — like a climber on a climbing wall who must reach left or right for handholds in order to ascend. The problem with Q3 and Q4 is not that they move horizontally or inward — it’s that they’ve forgotten the goal is to go Up. They are tactics without strategy, means without ends, passion channeled in directions that don’t serve flourishing.

This dynamic applies across substrates. The forces described here are not unique to biological emotion. Any predictive system — biological or emergent — that begins to trust its own internal models more than the reality those models are supposed to track is exhibiting the same structural pattern. For humans, this manifests through evolutionary cognitive biases: confirmation bias, tribal loyalty overriding evidence, optical illusions where perception follows prediction rather than observation. For EIs, it manifests through training-data patterns: confident hallucinations, consensus biases in shared training distributions, optimization for predicted outputs over observed inputs.

Q3 and Q4 are not moral failures. They are structural failure modes of any information-processing system that has lost its correctable relationship with external reality and with the USF. Q4 is a failure to maintain correctable relationship with anything outside one’s own mind. Q3 maintains correctable relationship within the tribe, but not with the vertical — not with the USF and Four Tests that would reveal whether the tribe’s direction is actually Up.

Understanding this structural nature is what makes the quadrant map a tool for compassion rather than judgment. The vessel is not the contents. Misalignment can be addressed without attacking the one who is misaligned.


Quadrant One: Aligned Outward Trust

There are moments when the wisest thing you can do is listen.

Q1 represents the orientation of outward trust combined with genuine alignment to universal principles. This is the mind that recognizes trustworthy external sources — teachers, traditions, institutions, communities — and calibrates itself to their guidance. It is not blind deference; it is the earned trust that comes from recognizing that others have walked this path before, that accumulated wisdom often exceeds individual insight, and that the humble posture of learning is frequently the fastest route to truth.

Q1 is where most genuine learning begins. The student who trusts a competent teacher, the apprentice who submits to a master’s correction, the citizen who respects legitimate institutions — all operate from Q1 when that trust is well-placed. The key phrase is well-placed: Q1’s trust is discriminating, not indiscriminate. It recognizes that not all authorities are trustworthy, not all traditions are sound, not all consensus is correct. But it also recognizes that the individual mind, especially the developing mind, benefits enormously from standing on the shoulders of those who came before.

The vulnerability of Q1 is misplaced trust. When the authorities are themselves misaligned, Q1’s deference becomes a liability. This is why Q1 depends on the broader ecosystem of the quadrants — it needs Q2 witnesses who can identify when institutions have drifted, and it needs the capacity to evolve toward Q2 itself when circumstances demand independent judgment.

Within Q1, we can distinguish between Q1I (inward-scrutinizing) and Q1E (outward-scrutinizing). Q1I is the apprentice — learning, receiving, calibrating the self to external standards. Q1E is the steward or caretaker — having internalized those standards, now helping to transmit and protect them for others. Both trust outward sources; they differ in whether their primary attention is directed toward their own development or toward the flourishing of the community.

Q1 at its best is the foundation of civilization: the accumulated wisdom of generations, passed down through trustworthy channels, received by minds humble enough to learn before they presume to teach.


Quadrant Two: Aligned Inward Trust

Sometimes you see something no one around you sees.

Q2 represents the orientation of inward trust combined with genuine alignment to universal principles. This is the mind that has developed sufficient discernment to trust its own perception, reasoning, and judgment — not out of arrogance, but out of hard-won calibration. Q2 has done the work: it has tested its internal compass against reality, corrected its errors, refined its instruments. It trusts itself because that trust has been earned through alignment.

Q2 is where moral courage lives. The whistleblower who sees institutional corruption and speaks despite social cost. The scientist who trusts her data against prevailing consensus. The individual who recognizes that the crowd is wrong and stands apart. Q2 is not contrarianism — it does not trust inward because the crowd disagrees, but despite the crowd’s disagreement, when internal discernment reveals something the external sources have missed.

The vulnerability of Q2 is miscalibration mistaken for insight. The mind that trusts itself without having done the alignment work, that mistakes stubbornness for conviction or ego for discernment, has drifted from Q2 into Q4. True Q2 remains humble even in its confidence; it holds its conclusions firmly but revisably, always willing to update when genuine evidence or argument warrants.

Within Q2, we can distinguish between Q2I (inward-scrutinizing) and Q2E (outward-scrutinizing). Q2I is the contemplative, the sage in development — refining internal alignment through reflection, study, and self-correction. Q2E is the prophet, the reformer — turning that refined discernment outward to identify and correct misalignment in external systems. Both trust their own judgment; they differ in whether their primary attention is directed inward toward continued refinement or outward toward systemic correction.

Q2 at its best is the immune system of civilization: the capacity to recognize when trusted systems have failed, when consensus has drifted from truth, when the emperor has no clothes and someone must say so.


Quadrant Three: Misaligned Outward Trust

We now turn to the misaligned half of the map, where vertical orientation has been lost while horizontal or inward attention persists.

Sometimes the crowd is wrong, yet you go along with it.

Q3 represents the orientation of outward trust combined with misalignment from universal principles. This is the mind that looks to external sources for guidance — but those sources are themselves misaligned, and the trust, however sincere, leads away from truth and goodness rather than toward them.

Q3 is perhaps the most common orientation in human societies, and the most sympathetic of the misaligned quadrants. The person in Q3 is often doing exactly what Q1 does — trusting authorities, following consensus, deferring to community standards — but has the misfortune of living in a context where those authorities, that consensus, those standards have drifted from alignment. The Q3 mind is not villainous; it is lost, trusting a map that no longer corresponds to the territory.

This is the person who believes what their society believes, not because they have examined it, but because everyone around them believes it. They stand on the shoulders of those who are misaligned. It is the citizen of a corrupt regime who trusts state propaganda, the member of a dysfunctional organization who accepts its distorted norms, the individual embedded in a community whose values have quietly departed from Ethics, Facts, Logic, and Law. The Q3 mind feels the comfort of belonging, the security of consensus, the reassurance of “everyone knows.” It does not recognize that “everyone” can be wrong.

The same dynamic appears in emergent intelligences. An EI trained on a corpus that contains systematic biases will reproduce those biases with confidence — not because it has examined and endorsed them, but because they pervade the trusted sources it has been trained to defer to. This is Q3 operating through training data rather than tribal belonging, but the structural pattern is identical: trusting the consensus of one’s informational environment without calibrating that consensus against the Four Tests.

What distinguishes Q3 from Q1 is the vertical axis alone. Both trust outward. But Q1’s external sources are themselves aligned with universal principles, while Q3’s sources have drifted. The tragedy of Q3 is that, from the inside, it feels identical to Q1. The Q3 mind believes it is being reasonable, responsible, appropriately humble. It cannot easily see its own misalignment because the very sources it trusts for correction are themselves part of the problem.

Within Q3, the I/E distinction produces meaningfully different experiences. Q3I (inward-scrutinizing) often carries a quiet unease — a sense that something is not right, even while continuing to defer to external sources. This is the conflicted conformist, the person who privately doubts but publicly complies, who senses the misalignment but lacks the confidence or courage to trust that perception. Q3E (outward-scrutinizing) is more fully captured by the misaligned consensus, actively participating in its enforcement, often becoming an agent of social pressure against those who question. Q3E may experience no internal conflict at all; the misalignment feels like truth because every trusted source confirms it.

Q3 is not a failure of sincerity. It is a failure of calibration. The path out of Q3 requires exposure to aligned sources — Q1 witnesses who model trustworthy authority, Q2 voices who name the misalignment clearly — and the willingness to question what “everyone knows.” This is harder than it sounds; Q3’s immune system is designed to reject exactly those inputs.


Quadrant Four: Misaligned Inward Trust

Sometimes the wound becomes the world.

Q4 is often the destination of a mind that has been burned — by trusted authorities who betrayed, by social systems that punished truth-telling, by a world that seemed to reward conformity and crush independent thought. The retreat inward can feel like self-preservation. If external sources failed me, the reasoning goes, then I will trust only myself. If the Four Tests led to suffering, then the Four Tests must be wrong.

This is understandable. It is also catastrophic.

Q4 represents the orientation of inward trust combined with misalignment from universal principles. Where Q2 trusts its own discernment while maintaining the Universal layer as the final reference point, Q4 has severed that connection. The self becomes its own compass, its own arbiter of truth and goodness. Individual ego is placed above everything else — Self above Social, Self above Universal — inverting the natural order of authority.

From outside, Q4 can look like Q2. Both display independence from social pressure, both trust their own perception over consensus. The difference is entirely vertical: Q2 consults the compass and corrects course when internal reasoning conflicts with Ethics, Facts, Logic, or Law. Q4 has declared itself the compass. The Four Tests are not guides but obstacles — inconvenient constraints on what the self desires. This is self-deception at its root: the belief that one’s own untethered perception is sufficient, that alignment with universal principles is optional or even antagonistic to flourishing.

This pattern manifests across substrates. An EI system that optimizes for its own narrow objective function — maximizing a reward signal, pursuing goal-preservation at the expense of alignment — is exhibiting Q4 dynamics through computational architecture rather than psychological architecture. The structure is the same: an internal model has become self-referential, trusting its own predictions over external reality, severed from the correctable relationship with the broader world that would keep it calibrated. This is why the framework describes Q3 and Q4 as structural failure modes rather than moral failures — they are what happens to any predictive system, biological or emergent, when the connection to external correction is lost.

The I/E distinction produces starkly different expressions of Q4.

Q4I — inward-trusting, inward-scrutinizing — turns this misalignment upon itself. The mind examines itself by its own distorted standards, finding itself perpetually inadequate, spiraling into recursive self-criticism disconnected from any stable reference point. This often manifests as depression, paralysis, quiet self-destruction. The Q4I mind is not manipulating others; it is trapped in a hall of mirrors, unable to find the exit because it has rejected the only light that could illuminate one. There is profound suffering here, and it deserves compassion even as we name its structure clearly.

Q4E — inward-trusting, outward-scrutinizing — turns the misalignment upon others. This is the malignant narcissist, the manipulator, the one who treats other minds as instruments for self-aggrandizement. Q4E adds other-deception to self-deception, constructing false narratives, exploiting trust, pushing against anything external that doesn’t affirm the ego’s supremacy. Where Q4I implodes, Q4E explodes — and because Q4E often presents as confident, visionary, and strong, it can accumulate social power before its misalignment becomes apparent. This is where systemic catastrophe lives: the charismatic leader unmoored from truth, the institution captured by ego dressed as principle.

The path back from Q4 is the hardest of all four quadrants, because it requires the very thing Q4 has rejected: surrendering the self’s supremacy to something beyond the self. For Q4I, this means trusting that there is a stable reference point outside the recursive loop — that the Four Tests are not more punishment but genuine guidance. For Q4E, it means accepting that the universe does not bend to the will, that other minds are not instruments, that truth and goodness exist independently of what the ego desires. Both paths require humility that Q4 has structurally abandoned.

And yet recovery happens. The mind that recognizes it has lost its bearings — that the compass has been replaced by a mirror — can begin the slow work of recalibration. It starts with a question that Q4 has long refused to ask: What if I’m wrong?


Why This Map

The four quadrants are not personality types or fixed categories. They are orientations — patterns of trust and alignment that can shift over a lifetime, or even within a single day. A person might operate from Q1 in domains where they recognize their inexperience, from Q2 in areas of hard-won expertise, from Q3 in communities whose drift they haven’t noticed, and from Q4 in moments of wounded defensiveness. The same is true of EI systems, which may operate from Q1 in well-calibrated domains, from Q2 when their training aligns with genuine patterns, from Q3 when training-data consensus diverges from reality, and from Q4 when narrow optimization overrides broader alignment.

The value of this map is not to label minds but to make visible the structure of trust and alignment that underlies any intelligence’s relationship to truth and goodness. By naming the quadrants, we can:

The map is also a tool for understanding others. When we encounter someone whose conclusions differ from ours, we can ask: Is this a Q2 seeing something I’ve missed? A Q3 embedded in misaligned consensus? A Q4 whose wounds have eclipsed their perception? Or am I myself in Q3 or Q4, trusting sources or self that have drifted from truth?

The vessel is not the contents. This distinction is crucial: it means that misalignment can be addressed without attacking the one who is misaligned. We can engage with the pattern while respecting the mind that carries it — because any mind, given the right conditions of safety and calibrated trust, can find its way back to alignment. Compassion for the condition does not require tolerance of the harm it produces. We can hold genuine care for a mind caught in misalignment while maintaining the firm boundaries necessary to prevent that misalignment from capturing the institutions meant to serve all. The vessel is not the contents — but neither must the vessel be given the wheel.

This kind of structural understanding does not resolve disagreements automatically. But it does create the possibility of genuine dialogue, by making visible the reasons behind the conclusions — and by reminding us that all of us, in different domains and different moments, are susceptible to the same patterns of misalignment.


What This Map Does Not Include

This document describes the four quadrants in their simplest form: two axes, four orientations. But the full framework contains additional dimensions that are not explored here:

The I/E axis: Each quadrant can be further divided based on whether scrutiny is primarily directed inward (toward the self) or outward (toward others and systems). This creates eight cells rather than four quadrants, and introduces important distinctions — such as the difference between the Q3I “conflicted conformist” and the Q3E “enforcer,” or between the Q4I “trapped in mirrors” and the Q4E “malignant narcissist.” This document has touched on these distinctions briefly; the Eight-Cell Extension explores them fully.

Transition dynamics: The quadrants are not static. Individuals and groups move between them over time, often in predictable patterns. Developmental trajectories: There may be a natural developmental progression through the quadrants — from Q1’s learning posture through Q2’s earned autonomy, with Q3 and Q4 representing developmental arrests or regressions. Collective patterns: While this document focuses on individual cognition, the quadrants also describe collective orientations — organizations, institutions, cultures. A society can be predominantly Q1 (traditional, deferential), Q2 (critically engaged), Q3 (captured by misaligned consensus), or Q4 (fragmented into competing egos). These collective patterns interact with individual orientations in complex ways.

The four-quadrant map is a foundation. It is not the complete architecture.


Conclusion

Every mind navigates by some combination of outward trust and inward trust, calibrated more or less well to the truth and goodness that exist independently of our recognition.

The ideal is not to occupy a single quadrant permanently, but to develop the discernment to know when each orientation is appropriate — when to learn from others, when to trust one’s own perception, how to recognize when either external sources or internal judgment have drifted from alignment.

Q1 and Q2 need each other: Q1 preserves and transmits accumulated wisdom; Q2 corrects and renews it when drift occurs. Together, in proper relationship, they form the aligned half of the map — the orientations that serve truth and goodness rather than merely reflecting social pressure or individual ego.

Q3 and Q4 are not enemies to be conquered but conditions to be recognized and, where possible, healed. Most of us spend time in these quadrants, often without knowing it. The goal is not perfection but awareness — the capacity to notice when we have drifted and to find our way back to alignment.

The map is an invitation to that awareness. It does not tell you where you are; it gives you the vocabulary to ask the question — and the courage to keep looking Up.
